- I may be missing something here. A connection of 21,600 although possibly
- the result of a variety of problems is not considered a good connection
- today
- with at 28.8 class modem. Most modems now fairly consistently connect
- at 28.8 with fallback to 26,400. If you are getting consistent maximums
- of
- 21,600 it may be due to an old code revision. Modems about a year ago
- from many suppliers topped out at 21,600 yet were called 28.8 modems.
- 21,600 is still better than 14,400 but is not great compared to most
- modems.
- Our AMQUEST Hyper Modem reports consistent 28,800 connections in most
- normal conditions and usually falls back to 26,400 under adverse
- conditions.
- About a year ago we only got 21,600 on our modems but things have
- improved in the chipsets and the modems at the other end.
- As far as 4:1 compression this is sort of a best case worst case.
- Basically as
- I understand it this is an average we seek at 28.8. Many if not most 28.8
- modems top out at around 88,000 throughput. We know we had them tested
- by a reputable source. This is due primarily to the horsepower of the
- microprocessor/microcontroller on the card. With the HyperModem we have
- sped up this circuitry and firmware to provide enough horsepower. The
- only
- other major constraint is the 115,200 dte which is believe it or not a
- somewhat
- mythical restriction of the UART. We moved this up to 230,000 which
- allows us
- to handle the bursts of compressed data which in some cases are higher
- than
- the average 4:1 compression.
- A final word. This can get very technical and controversial. However, on
- our
- AMQUEST HyperModem we tell people to fallback to the basic facts that our
- overall architecture is faster and our DTE rate is 230,000. So
- fundamentally it
- follows that we can handle faster data if it is being sent to us.
- Incidentally, many other modems claim 230,000 throughput. These are
- PCMCIA types, external Parallel types and external serial types through
- special
- serial interface cards. Ours is a standard internal and standard
- external. The
- internal has onboard UART set to 230,000 and the external requires a
- special
- high speed serial card available from many vendors which supports 230.
- The competitive products require special hardware, special drivers,
- special
- software. Ours works with what you have today!!
- Interesting, it really works.
- Thanks
